Car Care for the Summer Months
We always seem to make sure our cars are ready for the winter, right?
But what about during the summer? Believe it or not, the heat takes its toll on your car, too, so it’s important to keep your car serviced.
Your car’s performance and resale value are affected greatly by how well it is maintained. You should have your vehicle regularly serviced, following the guidleines set by your car dealer or manufacturer.
Now I know this isn’t bedtime reading, but the owner’s manual can be your best friend - assuming you read it! At least take a look-through periodically. How about while you’re waiting to get your oil changed?
Follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedules. This could save you a major breakdown.
To avoid a large repair bill, ensure that your air conditioning is checked by a qualified mechanic.
The greatest cause of summer breakdowns is overheating. Prevent this problem by making sure the cooling system is flushed and refilled as recommended.
During the vehicle service, make sure the belts and hoses are all checked properly by the mechanic. This shouldn’t take them long and is very important.
Make sure fluid changes are done at 3000 mile intervals.
Make sure that air and fuel filter are replaced as per manufacturers recommendations.
Make sure your windscreen washer fluid is replaced as you may have used most of it during the winter.
Tyre rotation should be done every 5000 miles. Any worn tyres should be replaced.
Also check the condition of your spare tire and removal tools.
If you get a broken transmission, it can translate into a very large hole in your pocket. Repairs are expensive but can be avoided with regular servicing.
Your brakes should be checked at regular intervals and if you notice that they are not working correctly in any way, then you must have them insnpected immediately.
Have your mechanic inspect your car battery to ensure it has enough life left.
Inspect all lights and bulbs to make sure they’re working.
Your vehcicle tool kit should include, jumper cables, a torch, and a first aid kit. You should also have a cell phone handy when travelling in your car.
There are some easy step that you can take to keep your car running smoothly during the summer.
Periodic checks take minutes, but can be a very important in prolonging the life of your car.
