How Can I Help Someone to Stop Smoking Once And For All?

by Michael Paulstone

If you know a smoker, there is plenty of cause for concern when it comes to their health and well being. Smoking, as you may know, is the number one cause of deaths form lung cancer in this country. Not only lung cancer, but many other forms of cancer are directly attributable to smoking, as well as many other diseases. You probably know someone who smokes and would like to know how to help them stop smoking.

Give them some motivation to quit.

A lot of smokers are unaware of what they are actually doing to their bodies by smoking. To help someone to stop smoking, you need to get them motivated too do so. There’s something which will get each and every smoker motivated to give up the habit. Perhaps the smoker you know is concerned with their health (other than the habit of smoking, of course). Maybe they have children - impress the value of being there for their children’s wedding day. Whatever it is, it has to be something which makes them want to quit badly enough to stick with it.

Will they listen to you if you tell them about the ways they are hurting themselves by smoking? One thing which has worked is showing the smoker pictures of diseased organs and blackened lungs - which is a dramatic way to illustrate just what smoking is doing to their body. You might want to wait until well after mealtime to do this of course, these pictures can be nauseating!

Support them.

Many smokers just need one thing to give up the habit - the support of those around them. Maybe they fear missing out on the places they used to go. Why not start taking them out to new places to hangout which are smoke free? They might also worry that their friends will no longer come by if there is no smoking in their home - talk to them and get their support too.

Another thing you can do to help someone to stop smoking is giving them stop smoking products, such as gum, patches, inhalers and other nicotine replacement products. Research these ahead of time so that if any questions are asked, you’ll have the answers. You’ll be able to assure them of the safety and efficacy of these products, which will help them to stop smoking.

How to really help someone to stop smoking.

The biggest thing you can do to help someone stop smoking is to encourage them. Even if they’ve tried and failed to stop smoking in the past, let them know that this is alright and not everyone manages to quit the first time they try. With your support and encouragement, you can help your special someone to stop smoking once ad for all!
