Online Tournament Pro Statistics

by Craig Edwards

There are websites that post the result of online tournaments. This data base allows us to examine the stats of the winning players online. Let’s see what we can learn from these stats.

First thing we see is that these guys play a lot of tournaments. One player, who made $200,000 on one site in one year of play, was in over 2,200 tournaments. He averaged paying $175 per event. His return on investment was 52%.

If he plays something like five days a week, he has to play over eight tournaments a day. You have to multi table to get this done. So, these players are playing a few games at the same time.

One benefit by playing such a high volume is that your good and bad luck evens out faster. If you play through a 30 tournament losing streak in three days, it is much less frustrating than doing it in fifteen or twenty days. The swing is the same but it seems shorter because a good result comes sooner.

If you can learn to play more than one table you get a couple of benefits. First you can make more money per hour if you can play successfully on more tables. Also, you are less tempted to make mistakes due to boredom. With four or more table going, there is always something going on.

There are good reasons that players play multiple tables. If you can sustain the quality of your play, you profit much faster. Also, this keeps you busy, some players play even better when they multi table. Even the best players online only make money in about 15% of the tournaments they play. The reason they profit is they occasionally hit a big result.

The thing that makes these players profitable is that they make the mot out of the opportunities to get into the top three spots. The money goes up dramatically at the end of the tournament. Getting one third is vastly more profitable that having a few twenty place finishes.

Are you a winning player? This can be hard to know until you have enough tournament data. Once you have played tons of tournaments you will see the real you. One big win or a streak of bad beats will throw your result way off.

After you get enough results, you will see what you can expect from yourself. If you keep playing the same tournaments against the same level of opponents, you should maintain your level of profitability. Then you can start to know how much money you will make, on average, each month.

The stats tell us that most top tournament players play a lot of tournaments. The exception might be an occasional high stakes player. And, in spite of such a high volume of play, they keep a decent ROI of at least 50%.

If you feel like you can beat the MTTs, make sure you study up on bank roll management, The ability to play won’t help you if you blow your roll. You can’t escape the fact that there will be losing streaks that you’ll need to ride out.
