Things The Kids Should Know Before They Start Cooking

by Darcy Watkins

Who wouldn’t like some help at hand while cooking in their kitchen. And who would fit better into the picture than your kids? Giving them some lessons in cooking will not only teach them how to cook for themselves when you are not around, but also make them more responsible and methodical.

But before you embark on the journey of teaching them cooking, you should first teach them the importance of cleanliness. Kids should understand why to keep their hands clean and hair tied or covered, not to lick fingers while cooking, keeping the raw and cooked vegetables separate. This will also help in keeping illnesses at bay. It is also very important to teach them why not to cook food at very high or low temperatures.

Discuss the entire recipe with the kids before you all start cooking. This will ensure that you don’t miss out on anything and that all the ingredients are in place and the entire cooking process goes on smoothly. Try to stick to the exact procedure for the best results.

While telling the kids recipes, also tell them why and how a particular appliance is used. In case of electrical appliances, teach them how to save electricity by turning them off when not in use and how to protect themselves against electric shock by always keeping your hands dry and wearing bathroom slippers or shoes.

Always use hot pads when operating the oven and while taking out or putting in the trays. Try to use hot pads as far as possible in front of the kids so that they also pick up this habit. Also teach them to never taste food in a hot spoon and always wait for a few seconds when tasting hot food so that it cools down a little bit.

Keep the knives in the kitchen sharp so that you get maximum effect in the least time. The kids must know how to properly handle a knife without cutting themselves. They should also be taught never to put the knives in soapy water to keep anyone from getting hurt while doing the dishes.

The kids should be taught never to throw water on hot stove and also to call the adults or the neighbors or 911 in case of an emergency.

The kids should be aware of the health problems that can be caused by semi-cooked food and even by tasting it. Also taste food with a different spoon every time you have to.

Use the free time during cooking to clean the dishes, kitchen counter, to put the balance unused ingredients and appliances in place.

The kids should learn as early as possible about the basic cooking so that they don’t have to rely on junk food for filling their stomach when they grow up.
