What About Insurance For An Antique Car?
Do you like to fee like Jay Leno driving your antique car in a local parade. Or maybe it is just the pride of ownership you enjoy as it stands out at your favorite car show. Have you thought much about the insurance coverage you have on it. You may be paying way too much.
There are many reasons people buy and keep up antique cars. Most of the time people have antique cars to show off to their family and friends and to ride in it during the Christmas parade. You may not be driving it other than that. You want to keep it in excellent condition and do not want to risk getting it scratched and maybe they are not the most gas efficient cars. Just because your car is over 25 years old does not make it a better car a more efficient car. If you treat you car as a true antique, you may get a big break on the insurance.
Since the parts and cars are virtually irreplaceable, the antique auto insurance requires the person to make sure the car is secured. This means that they must not be just covered with a tarp in the yard. They must be in a garage and secured. This protects from damage and theft.
You may find that if you are only driving your car to club meetings, parades and special events that you are paying way too much for you antique auto insurance. An antique car is an investment. Many times the parts and the car itself can not be replaced. That is why antique auto insurance has certain restrictions. They do not want you to take unnecessary risks but they are willing to give you a decent premium if you take certain precautions.
It’s also important to realize that there is a difference between antique auto insurance and the coverage provided for vehicles such as “muscle” cars, racing cars, and even what you may call classic cars. Most antique cars need to be 25 years old or more, whereas classic cars may be only fifteen years old. Also, it may be assumed that muscle cars and racers will be used more often and may pose more of a risk for accidents - most who own cars like this know how tempting it is to start racing it or showboating just a little.
If you have an old car you’re proud of, consider getting antique auto insurance so that it doesn’t need to just sit in the garage. Shop around a little to get a good deal. It isn’t as expensive as you may think it is. Since the car is driven so infrequently there is not much risk for the insurance company so they don’t charge as much as they do for your everyday car.
